Rural School Bus Pilot Project

This pilot project helps rural school districts get rid of older, dirty school buses and replace them with ultra-clean and zero-emission models.

  • This program has received $55.0 million

  • $9.4 million has been implemented

The project could fund as many as 60 new school buses statewide, reducing roughly 10,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. 

Who can access funds?

Public School Districts, Public Charter Schools, County Office of Education, joint powers authorities, and the Division of State Special Schools in the State Department of Education.

Anticipated Timelines

The application period is closed.

  • Year 1 (2016-17) vehicles must be delivered by February 1, 2020.

  • Year 2 Projects (2017-18) agreements went to schools in Spring 2019.

  • Year 3 Projects (2018-19) will be selected in Summer of 2019.
