Forest Legacy

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)

What does it fund?

Protection of environmentally important forest land threatened with conversion to non-forest uses, through CAL FIRE’s purchasing of conservation easements or fee title of productive forest lands from willing sellers. This funding is also used to support the program staff who work directly with grantees before, during and after a grant is made, including helping grantees to prepare for a solicitation, complete the necessary due diligence work to finalize an easement purchase, and perform annual project monitoring.

Who is eligible for funds?

Private forestland. Eligible properties include those with working forest and rangelands, where the property is managed for the production of forest products and traditional forest uses are maintained.

How does this program provide benefits to priority populations?

Projects funded under this program help keep forestland intact and serve to secure existing open space, open new public access opportunities and support the forestry industry within priority population areas.

How do I access funds?

Apply through a statewide competitive process.
